Course description

Research shows the prevention of crisis behavior and reduction of seclusion and restraint is possible in school settings.  Leadership teams, comprised of 2-5 people such as administrators, school psychologists, or behavior specialists, will learn the six research-based components to guide and retrain a team on a systemic framework for reducing Emergency Safety Interventions (ESI) within a school and/or district that is sustainable over time. The six components include leadership oversight, use of data to inform practice, performance development, use of prevention supports, student and family engagement, and debriefing techniques. The purpose of this training is to provide leaders a framework to reduce the use of ESI across a building and/or district and is not a behavior intervention training for direct care providers. This training, designed for leadership teams, will provide participants with tools to develop a building and/or district action plan to reduce ESI, develop building and/or district goals for reducing ESI, monitor and increase treatment integrity within a building and/or district, develop an oversight plan to establish roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders, develop a staff recognition plan for meeting goals, and structure debriefing techniques with students and staff.

Prior to the training, one leadership team member will need to print a copy of their district's policy statement around the use of Emergency Safety Interventions (ESIs) and have it accessible to use during an activity at the training. If your district does not currently have a policy statement around the use of ESIs, have a discussion prior to the training with necessary administrators on what might be included and bring notes of that discussion to the training.

Learning Objectives

After completing the training and follow-up coaching, leadership teams will:

  • Compare and contrast the research on the impact the use of Emergency Safety Interventions (ESIs) has on students, families, and staff
  • Apply knowledge of ESI Regulations to assess when and when not to use ESIs and alternative strategies to use in order to prevent the use of ESIs

  • Develop, implement, and analyze a system-wide plan for preventing the use of ESIs in their setting
