Course description
With the rapid increase of students with autism and the rise of the variety of interventions available and marketed, determining which interventions are supported by research and which are not is an increasingly difficult task. This presentation will begin with an overview of tools used to make determinations about the evidence base of interventions (e.g., professional journals, National Professional Development Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders reports/briefs and the National Autism Center report) and discussion of the similarities and differences between them. Next, the practices that have shown evidence of effectiveness will be reviewed. Discussion of each strategy will include a summary of the research, an overview of each strategy and video or picture examples of implementation of the strategy. Strategies for evaluating claims of effectiveness of interventions will also be outlined as well as practical methods of implementing the strategies in a school environment.
