Course description
This five part series will discuss the culture of autism and the TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children) approach to instruction, which was developed by Eric Schopler in the late 1970s. An overview of the basic principles for using visual supports to structure the environment, promote learning, and foster independence will be presented.
In Part 3: Assessing Schedules and Work Systems, participants will:
• Be introduced to a resource that will help them learn a process for assessing individual students in their use of a visual schedule.
• Become familiar with the skill set needed to be able to follow a visual schedule.
• Become familiar with the skill set needed to be able to follow an independent work system.
• Learn how to record a student’s progress towards independence in using a schedule and work system.
• Learn how to modify a schedule or work system to make it more concrete or more abstract, depending upon student learning.
