Session Information

Title: Huh, What did you say? Communication and AT Strategies to Support Fluctuating Hearing Loss in Students

Description: On any given day in a classroom 1 in 6 students have a conductive hearing loss.  Fluctuating hearing loss can be caused by simple head colds where students unknowingly have fluid in their middle ear.  This impact on hearing can manifest in students as difficulties with attention or even behavioral outbursts.  If, on average, 45% of classroom time is spent listening to the teacher’s voice what strategies and assistive technology tools can support students?  Dr. Harden a long-time educational audiologist will share insights into intermittent student hearing loss.  Participants will have the opportunity to discuss best practices for communication strategies and assistive technology that can be embedded into daily routines.

Presenter Bio: Dr. Rochelle Harden is a practicing audiologist with 15 years of experience in education.  She is also a member of the assistive technology team at the South Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative.  She has served two terms as vice president of Audiology for the Kansas Speech-Language Hearing Association and is dedicated to supporting students with all needs in the classroom.
