Course description
This five part series will discuss the culture of autism and the TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children) approach to instruction, which was developed by Eric Schopler in the late 1970s. An overview of the basic principles for using visual supports to structure the environment, promote learning, and foster independence will be presented.
In Part 1: The Principles of Structured Teaching, participants will learn to:
• Understand the culture of autism
• Understand the importance of individualized support
• Understand the concept of visually based support
• Understand the major components of Structured Teaching: physical organization and visual boundaries, schedules, work systems, routines, and task organization.
