Catatonia is a disorder affecting speech, movement, and behavior that is estimated to impact 12 to 18 percent of adolescents and young adults with ASD. Despite commonly occurring in ASD, this profound condition most often goes unrecognized.

Learner Objectives:

The learner objectives for part 2 include:

  • List three red flags for catatonia in ASD
  • List the two primary forms of medical treatment
  • Describe psychological intervention strategies that are helpful for individuals with ASD and catatonia 

Presenters:

Ruth Aspy, Ph.D., and Barry G. Grossman, Ph.D., are licensed psychologists in private practice with the Ziggurat Group; specializing in assessment and intervention for individuals with ASD. They are the co-creators of a comprehensive model of intervention. Their book, The Ziggurat Model, was the 2008 Autism Society of America winner for outstanding book of the year. catatonia.
