The “talk” that happens in our classrooms is an important aspect of facilitating young children’s oral language and early literacy skills. Learning how to ask and answer questions and use new words are important elements of language development. This session will describe the developmental sequences of children’s ability to respond to questions, from concrete to more abstract, and ways that children develop vocabulary. Research-based classroom questioning and vocabulary instructional routines will be shared.
