Virtual Workshop - Cuisenaire Rods: Endless Math Possibilities!

Course description

In this hands-on interactive workshop, we will explore one of my favorite math manipulatives: Cuisenaire Rods! As you will see, these manipulatives are quite versatile and can be used to represent many topics in math. We will begin by investigating how the rods can be used in the math classroom and create lessons/activities that are applicable for your students. The workshop will be geared towards educators in grades 3-6, but the basic concepts and principles will also help teachers from younger and older grades.

Please BYOR (Bring Your Own Rods) for maximal participation and enjoyment!

If you do not have access to a set of cuisenaire rods you can either:

• purchase a set (there are lots of options, plastic or wooden, on Amazon for less than $20)
• use a virtual platform, such as https://nrich.maths.org/4348
• print a set on cardstock from the following template (Note: you may want to make several copies)

Learning Objectives

In particular, the learning objectives for our session include using Cuisenaire rods to:

• Facilitate understanding of Place Value
• Represent whole number arithmetic operations, with a special focus on Multiplication and Division
• Improve Fraction magnitude representations
• Develop conceptual understanding of Fraction operations
