Assistive Technology to Promote Literacy for Students with Significant Disabilities Series 2021-2022 Session 5

“No student is too anything to be able to read and write.”  This quote from David Yoder from Comprehensive Literacy for All by Karen Erikson and David Koppenhaver encourages educational professionals to expect all students to achieve at the same level as their peers.  Children with complex communication needs and complex bodies often have limited opportunities to develop print literacy, which is reading and writing, for meaningful purposes.  Throughout the series, teams will collaborate to design daily structured literacy routines that will be essential to building a foundation for comprehensive literacy development for their students.  Participants will complete the SETT process to gather data and trial assistive technology tools such as an alternative pencil to support their target student's literacy skill development.  Teams will also investigate assistive technology tools such as the alternative pencils available for students to support writing.  ]Collaboratively teams will analyze instructional routines when given self-assessments, collect student data including writing samples and share back student progress with the other participants at the last session.  Join us for this collaborative, hands-on experience where teams will participate in ongoing coaching sessions with facilitators to develop implementation plans and collect data. Facilitators will be available to help with brainstorming, feature matching, and problem-solve.  Together let's work to promote literacy for all of our students.  The series will begin in August and end in March. Teams will meet for an online class monthly and also receive ongoing coaching sessions with the session facilitator.  

Learning Objectives

Throughout the series participants will

  • analyze evidence on the impact of daily literacy instruction and illustrate why it is essential for a target student
  • assess and analyze behavior to determine if a student is emergent or conventional literacy learner
  • complete the SETT process and identify needed assistive technology need to prompt literacy (reading and writing) including an alternative pencil
  • investigate and trial an alternative pencil to promote writing with a target student
  • develop and practice instructional literacy routines that are personally relevant and meaningful and complete an instructional observation form to self reflect on adult instruction
  • develop a plan of action to implement a predictable chart writing activity and a shared reading activity for an emergent literacy learner (or guided reading activity for conventional literacy learner)
  • analyze new learning and impact on practice by completing a pre and post-self-reflection and self-assessment adult student writing inventory measure
