Course description

Note: This is day 3 of a three-day training! You will be sharing your implementation plan, results & reflection in an online setting using this zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81414062368?pwd=Mms4N2NBc3gvNG9vbnVIcWZkOVpXZz09

Every day, in classrooms from early childhood through high school, behaviors occur that interfere with desired academic and social outcomes.  On close examination, however, these behaviors could actually be the result of social competencies that are not developed, taught, mastered, and demonstrated. For students with autism and other complex disabilities, a delay in interpersonal and intrapersonal skills interferes with being successful, both socially and academically, at school, at home, and in the community.

Teaching, practicing, modeling, and encouraging essential personal life habits that are universally understood as making people good human beings and citizens is a Kansans Can outcome. The Kansans Can Competency Framework (Noonan & Gaumer-Erickson, 2016) has been adopted by KSDE and provides a foundation and resources to support social competencies (e.g. interpersonal and intrapersonal skills) for all students. In this professional development opportunity, TASN ATBS provides a process that includes assessment, planning, and implementing evidence-based strategies for students with disabilities who need specially designed, tier three instruction to develop competencies such as assertiveness, self-regulation, self-awareness, communication and self-efficacy.

Special education teachers, related-service providers, instructional coaches and specialists, administrators, and family members will benefit from this opportunity that includes creating a plan to implement with a student or group of students with delays in social-emotional skills.

During days one and two of this three-day training (October 6 & 7) participants will design a plan for one of their students or small group of students and return to their classroom to implement this plan. This process will be supported by TASN ATBS coaches. After classroom implementation, participants will return for day three and share their student outcomes and reflection with their colleagues on this training day, November 16.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • Discuss and analyze the evidence that supports social competencies instruction and intervention for students with autism and other complex needs

  • Explore and evaluate the evidence-based strategies that support instruction and intervention in social competencies

  • Design a social competency implementation plan linking assessment and a short-term goal to instructional decisions and data collection strategies

  • Evaluate the implementation of your plan through examination during a virtual coaching conversation

  • Evaluate and defend decisions and reflections, based on positive student outcomes, through a presentation to colleagues during a virtual meeting
