Course description

It's All About YOU! Using Behavior Analytic and Instructional Strategies to Improve Student Outcomes

In this four-day training, participants will learn evidence-based instructional strategies needed to work with students with behavioral challenges, students with ASD, and other students with complex needs.  Intervention always includes instruction!  Strategies will include teaching methods to use before, during, and after behaviors occur.   This training is designed to provide participants with tools to intervene before instructional errors or behaviors can occur, resulting in measurable student progress. This Train the Trainer model will provide participants with training tools to go back to their districts and train direct care staff, teachers, other service providers, etc. Participants will be required to demonstrate competency in the skills learned in this training. This training is designed for people who work directly with students within the classroom setting, trainers, direct service providers, educational leaders, coordinators, or other professionals charged with providing training to other adult learners and who are confident in doing so in an applied learning context.  Teams of two or more are recommended. Coffee, snacks, and bottled water are provided. Lunch (on your own).

Learning Targets

Day 1 & Day 2

1.   Antecedent Interventions (Opportunities to Respond, Behavior Momentum, Pre-Correction, Choice, etc.)

2.   Objective observation and Report Writing

3.   Measurement and Graphing

4.   Reinforcement, Prompting and Prompt Fading, and Stimulus Fading

Day 3 & Day 4

5.   Shaping, Task Analysis, Errorless teaching, and Error correction - Hands on practice with a partner

6.   Professional Practice (Treatment integrity, Confidentiality, etc.)

7.   Train the Trainer – Practice training components using the Behavior Skills Training Model in small groups

  • Please indicate in "Accommodations" if you will need a lactation room.
  • Participants will only receive CE credit if they attend the whole training and do not leave early.
  • Participants are required to watch 5 online webinars before days 3 & 4 of the training.
  • Two coaching conversations are required for this training to discuss implementation activities.
  • Participants will participate in an Implementation Activity event to present strategies learned from the training and provide student outcome data.  This event will be discussed in detail at the training.  After the training is complete, participants will record one teaching session with a learner to teach a discrete or chained behavior using errorless teaching procedures and will receive feedback from a TASN trainer using a fidelity checklist.
  • This training aligns with KSDE's mission and goals by focusing on individualizing student programming and providing evidence-based strategies to improve student outcomes.

The BACB does not warrant, endorse, sponsor, approve, or partner with the event, organization, or instructor.  12 CEUs will be awarded for the completion of all requirements. Learners will be able to objectively observe and record events occurring in the environment.

Learners will be able to enter data in the TASN Behavior Graphing Tool.

Day 2

Learners will practice identifying potential reinforcers and planning the delivery of reinforcement.

Learners will identify and practice prompt and prompt fading procedures.

Day 3

Learners will identify and practice the components of a shaping procedure.

Learners will analyze the application of instructional antecedent strategies for decreasing undesired behavior and illustrate the next steps in student interventions.

Learners will analyze behavior and write a task analysis based on the individual components of the behavior.

Learners will practice and refine Errorless Teaching Procedures and Error Correction.

Learners will practice collecting data on Skill Acquisition and Treatment Fidelity.

Day 4

Learners will design, practice, and evaluate a professional development structure using the Behavior Skills Training model to improve treatment integrity.

Learners will evaluate treatment integrity and provide performance feedback.
