This session is part of the Kansas Infinitec Virtual Practitioners' Technology Summit on February 25, 2022.
During our morning session, Brandon Bean from the Mulvane School District will be discussing how he has focused on student engagement and technology integration to enhance student independence and learning. As educators, our aim is to empower our students to become expert learners. This session will focus on expanding student engagement within the general education classroom. Learners differ markedly in the ways in which they can be engaged and motivated to learn. We can begin by asking "Why do my students want to learn this lesson?". Katie Novak, author of UDL NOW!, explains "While focusing on the why, the teacher builds engagement by giving students choices, minimizing threats and distractions, encouraging students to set their own goals, promoting expectations that optimize motivation, facilitating personal coping skills, and developing self-assessment." Technology is not required to enhance student engagement but it is a powerful tool to support expanding student engagement, providing specific information about their learning, and promoting student independence. During this session, participants will be given examples from educators involved with Kansas Infinitec Access for ALL who have worked to make classroom content meaningful, accessible, and engaging for their students. Focusing on engagement provides us with strategies to motivate students and also allows them to develop perseverance and coping skills in the classroom.
